Treatment Options

Learn more about the treatment option available for droopy eyelids

A browlift is a surgical procedures to correct sagging forehead skin, eyebrows and upper eyelids. It also can improve the look of wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyes.

Why choose a browlift for droopy eyelids

This procedure is often performed on patients in their 40s to 60s to help slow the effects of aging. A browlift can:

Minimize the creases the develop across the forehead of those that occur high on the bridge of the nose.Improve what are commonly referred to as frown lines.Reposition a low or sagging brow.

Possible risks

Occasionally, browlifts can make it hard to raise the eyebrows or wrinkle the forehead on one or both sides. If this happens, more surgery may be required.Browlifts are not recommended on patients who already have had plastic surgery to lift their upper eyelids because it could affect the ability to close their eyelids. In patients with high or receding hairlines, a thin scar my be visible after surgery. If the forehead skin is pulled too tightly or there is a lot of swelling, a wide scar could form.

Estimated cost

The average cost for a browlift is about $6,825. Since most medical insurance companies consider a browlift a cosmetic procedure, it is usually not covered.

How to prepare for the procedure

Before the procedure, an ASDS dermatologist will review the patient's medical history. This is the time for the doctor and patient to discuss expectations, potential risks and outcomes of the procedures. Patients should be sure to alert their doctors if they have a history of:

  • Blood clotting problems
  • Smoking
  • Tendency to form excessive scars
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure

What to expect after the procedure

  • The area is wrapped with a sterile padding and an elastic bandage to prevent bleeding and swelling. The bandages will be removed a day or two after surgery. Within 10 to 14 days, the stitches or clips will be removed.
  • Patients will feel numbness and temporary discomfort in the treated area. The pain from that discomfort can be managed with medication.
  • The head must be raised for two to three days after surgery to prevent swelling.
  • Bruising and swelling will occur around the eyes and cheeks but should begin to disappear in a few days or a week.
  • Patients will be able to return to work within seven to 10 days.
  • Numbness of the forehead and scalp will be replaced with itching or tingling. It may take up to six months for these sensations to fully disappear.
