ASDS awards Brandt fellowship grants

2016 Brand Fellowship winners

2016 Brandt Fellowship grant recipients Omer Ibrahim, MD, left, and Yakir Levin, MD

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery recently announced its 2016 grant recipients of the Fredric S. Brandt, M.D., Innovations in Aesthetics Fellowship Fund.

Yakir Levin, M.D., Ph.D., of Boston and Omer Ibrahim, M.D., of Chestnut Hill, Mass., each will receive a $25,000 clinical research grant through the program, established in 2015 to continue the legacy of Dr. Brandt.

Dr. Brandt – widely known as one of the most innovative dermatologic surgeons in the field – was a major ASDS contributor and leader, receiving the ASDS Excellence in Education Award in 2009 for having continuously served as ASDS Annual Meeting faculty during the previous decade. Dr. Brandt also served as a contributing editor of the prestigious Dermatologic Surgery journal.

The Fredric S. Brandt, M.D., Innovations in Aesthetics Fellowship Fund – funded by The Allergan Foundation – promotes and supports the career development of junior cosmetic dermatologic surgeons focused on cosmetic treatments and patient care.

Dr. Levin will conduct the first-of-its-kind study “Laser Tattoo Removal: Does the plume contain hazards and what safety measures are appropriate?” Dr. Ibrahim will conduct “Treatment of perioral rhytides using topical PLLA and fractionated CO2 laser.”

The 2016 Fredric S. Brandt, MD, Innovations in Aesthetics Fellowship Fund winners were recognized at the recent 2016 ASDS Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

“Dr. Brandt was a pioneer in dermatologic surgery, well known for his expertise as well as his compassion and dedication to his patients,” said ASDS President Thomas E. Rohrer, M.D. “The Brandt fellowship fund is a fitting tribute to his passion for cosmetic dermatologic surgery and his commitment to helping train the next generation of leaders in the field.”

The fund supports the research and clinical needs of fellows enrolled in an ASDS-accredited Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship Training Program. Dr. Levin is completing his fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center in Boston and Dr. Ibrahim is completing his fellowship at SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
