Drs. Alastair and Jean Carruthers have revolutionized cosmetic dermatology with their pioneering use of injectables and noninvasive techniques to provide safe, effective, affordable results that are compatible with patients’ lives and budgets. In the decades since their discoveries, the Carruthers have cultivated an active curiosity and tireless work ethic that has enabled them to continue to lead research efforts that have expanded our understanding of these and other cosmetic procedures. They have been advocates both for patients and for physicians, and have graciously welcomed both into their work, and shared their understanding widely.
Apart from their gifts to medicine and dermatology, Drs. Jean and Alastair Carruthers have made exceptional, ongoing contributions to the ASDS, ensuring ASDS’ ability to train future leaders and to continue as a vibrant, well-respected professional society. Without their innovative work, advocacy, curiosity and knowledge, cosmetic dermatology would not be where it is today, and ASDS would not be the society that it is. Alastair and Jean are truly role models for current and future dermatologic surgeons, and it is fitting that the research abstract award for fellows completing ASDS cosmetic dermatologic surgery fellowships be named in their honor.
