New Leadership Terms Begin at the ASDS Annual Meeting
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., OCTOBER 12, 2018 – Members of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) recently elected a new Vice President, Treasurer and three members of the Board of Directors. Their terms officially began this morning at the 2018 ASDS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Office of President: Murad Alam, MD, MBA
Dr. Alam succeeds Lisa M. Donofrio, MD, who became the Society’s Immediate Past President. He is the Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he is also a Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology and Surgery and Section Chief of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery.
Dr. Alam has been an active ASDS member for 15 years and currently serves as Chair of the ASDS Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship Accreditation and ASDSA Federal Affairs Work Groups. Over the years, he has served on numerous ASDS work groups and task forces, including his tenure as the ASDSA’s AMA Representative on the CPT Advisory Committee since 2008. Dr. Alam is passionate about protecting the specialty and frequently advocates for dermatologists and their patients.
Office of President-Elect: Adam M. Rotunda, MD
Dr. Rotunda ascends to President-Elect. Based in Newport Beach, he serves as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Dermatology at the University of California Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine and is an Assistant Volunteer Clinical Professor at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine Department of Dermatology. He has served ASDS in multiple capacities over the past 15 years with increasing responsibility. This includes mentorship roles in various programs for residents and early-career members, as well as participation in work groups, task forces and as educational program faculty.
Office of Vice President: Marc D. Brown, MD
Elected as Vice President in 2018-19, Dr. Brown will ascend to President-Elect in 2019-20 and President in 2020-21. He currently serves as Director of the Division of Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology and Professor of Dermatology and Oncology at the University of Rochester’s School of Medicine in Rochester, New York. An active ASDS member since residency, he previously served on the Boards of Directors and has participated in numerous work groups, leading both the Audit Committee and Educational Exchange Work Group as Chair. Dr. Brown has authored 65 peer-reviewed publications.
“Ongoing public education and media coverage is imperative to continue the message of the safe and effective surgical treatments that we provide,” said Dr. Brown. “Additionally, it is important we work at the local, state and national levels to ensure that policy makers and insurance payers know who we are and what we do.”
Office of Treasurer: Dee Anna Glaser, MD
Former Board member, Dr. Glaser assumes the role of Treasurer. Dr. Glaser is Interim Chairman and Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She is also Director of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery and Clinical Research at SLUCare Physician Group in St. Louis, Missouri. A passionate ASDS member for more than 20 years and President’s Award winner in 2015, Dr. Glaser has served on the ASDS Board of Directors and is a Lifetime Sustaining Stegman Circle Member having donated generously to the Society. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Task Force on Academic Cosmetic Practice and has served as an ASDS Preceptor since 2005, mentoring younger members.
“A principal goal of our mission and a key to an effective and successful future for ASDS continues to be education for the physicians and the public and our members,” said Dr. Glaser. “Increasing membership and member engagement, along with building strategic alliances, have become vital to maintaining and growing our society and its ability to contribute in a meaningful and effective way.”
Elected to three-year terms on the ASDS / ASDSA Boards of Directors are:
Deirdre Hooper, MD
In addition to her private practice, Audubon Dermatology, Dr. Hooper is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at both Tulane University and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. She serves on the faculty for the Premier Annual Resident Cosmetic Symposium and is a member of the Annual Meeting and Quest Engagement Work Groups. She has presented at and instructed a handful of ASDS Annual Meeting sessions, including hands-on injection workshops.
“I strongly believe we should continue to enhance educational opportunities so that any member, from anywhere, at any stage of a career, can find a variety of meaningful educational programs,” said Dr. Hooper.
Shannon D. Humphrey, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Humphrey is the Medical Director at Carruthers & Humphrey Cosmetic Dermatology as well as Director of Continuing Medical Education and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is Co-chair of the Education Work Group and serves as a mentor in the Future Leaders Network Program. A Contributing Editor for the peer-reviewed journal “Dermatologic Surgery,” she has also authored 50 papers and 14 book chapters.
“In a climate where professionals (medical and otherwise) are encroaching on our specialty, it is by holding ourselves to the highest standard of science, research and education that dermatologists will elevate our specialty and secure our place as experts and pioneers in our field,” said Dr. Humphrey.
Patrick K. Lee, MD
Dr. Lee is Director of Clinical Operations, Director of Dermatologic Surgery, Program Director of the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship, Associate Residency Program Director and Health Sciences Clinical Professor at the University of California in Irvine. He is a member of the Research Work Group and is the author of 19 publications.
“We must remain dedicated to educating our members, our dermatologic surgeons in training, our government and most importantly, our patients,” said Dr. Lee. “The ASDS Annual Meeting continues to be the resource through which our members gain their cutting-edge information, and we must continue to provide high quality offerings in all these arenas.”
Elected as Resident Representative to the ASDS and ASDSA Boards of Directors is Hayley S. Goldbach, MD. She attends the University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine and has been a member of ASDS since her first year of residency. The Resident Representative holds a two-year term providing input and guidance to the Society and Association in their efforts to expand outreach and services to dermatology residents.
“I am particularly interested in resident outreach and helping to improve communication with them, especially with residents who are not planning on a purely surgical or procedural career,” said Dr. Goldbach.
