Dr. Carrie Davis, Indiana Academy of Dermatology and Senator Liz Brown Recognized for Legislative Efforts
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., OCTOBER 12, 2018 – The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) honored the recipients of the 2018 Patient Safety Hero awards this morning at the ASDS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Carrie L. Davis, MD, was honored with the 2018 ASDSA Patient Safety Hero Award, which is given annually to an ASDSA member who has contributed significantly to a successful campaign focused on patient safety in his or her state legislative or regulatory area.
Dr. Davis was instrumental in working with Senator Liz Brown, who received the 2018 State Legislative Patient Safety Hero Award, to introduce ASDSA’s SUNucate model legislation in Indiana. SUNucate helps eliminate barriers to the use of important sun protection methods in schools and day camps, allowing children to bring and apply sunscreen without a doctor’s note or prescription.
Dr. Davis worked with the Indiana Academy of Dermatology (IAD), of which she was President, to help members testify in front of legislative committees and shepherd the bill to Governor Eric Holcomb’s desk for signature. Indiana was the first state to pass SUNucate legislation in 2018, and to recognize its hard work, ASDSA honored IAD with the 2018 State Dermatologic Society Patient Safety Hero Award.
“All schools should allow sunscreen to protect students from the sun, just as they allow students to bring and wear hats and gloves on the playground to protect against the cold,” said Dr. Davis. “Sun-safe practices are a public health concern, and SUNucate encourages Hoosier students to use sunscreen and generate lasting sun-safe practices.”
“ASDSA is grateful for the diligent teamwork by Dr. Davis, IAD and Senator Brown to champion this initiative in Indiana,” said ASDSA President Murad Alam, MD, MBA. “Use of sunscreen early in life prevents a skin cancer diagnosis later on, and the youth of Indiana now have access to sunscreen at these crucial times during school or day camp when they are exposed to UV rays.”
